Vitamin C

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a water-soluble vitamin and one of the most important antioxidants for the human body. It supports the immune system, promotes collagen formation, and protects cells from oxidative stress.

Vitamin C – The Essential Antioxidant

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that the human body cannot produce on its own. It must therefore be regularly obtained through diet or supplementation. Vitamin C is one of the most extensively researched vitamins and plays a central role in numerous body functions essential for maintaining health and vitality.

Immune System Support

Vitamin C is indispensable for a properly functioning immune system. It supports the production and activity of white blood cells (leukocytes), which serve as the body's first line of defense against pathogens. Furthermore, vitamin C promotes the production of interferons, which strengthen antiviral defenses. Studies have shown that adequate vitamin C intake can reduce the duration and severity of common colds and upper respiratory infections.

Collagen Formation and Tissue Health

One of the most critical functions of vitamin C is its role in collagen synthesis. Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the human body and forms the structural framework for skin, bones, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. Without sufficient vitamin C, the body cannot produce functional collagen, which over time can lead to scurvy, a condition characterized by bleeding gums, poor wound healing, and joint pain.

Antioxidant Protection

As a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C protects cells from damage caused by free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Free radicals are generated as byproducts of normal metabolism as well as through external factors such as UV radiation, environmental pollution, and smoking.

  • Cell protection: Neutralizes free radicals and prevents oxidative cell damage
  • Regeneration: Helps regenerate vitamin E, another important antioxidant, restoring its protective capacity
  • Iron absorption: Significantly improves the absorption of plant-based (non-heme) iron from the intestines
  • Neurotransmitters: Involved in the synthesis of norepinephrine and serotonin, supporting brain function
